Cleaning Teeth After Oral Surgery

Oral surgery may sound like a complex term, but it simply refers to any surgical procedure performed in or around your mouth and jaw. There are many different procedures that are considered oral surgery. These may include a biopsy, periodontal surgery, apical surgery (removal of the root tip), implant surgery, or extraction of teeth. Many people have had their wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, removed which is considered an oral surgery.

After Surgery

Your body needs to heal after surgery with minimal complications. It is always best to follow your dental professional’s advice. This may include instructions on what to expect with bleeding, swelling, eating, drinking, pain medications, and how to clean your mouth.

For the first 24 hours it is usually best to not clean the teeth next to the healing site, so that you don’t disrupt the blood clot. You should continue to still brush and clean between all your other teeth as you normally would.

After this initial healing phase, begin cleaning the teeth next to the surgical site. Please use caution when brushing around the surgical site by doing so very gently for the first two weeks.

TePe Products

TePe has designed specific products to use after oral surgery that are very gentle. The bristles are soft, making them ideal to use around delicate oral tissue, after oral surgery, peri-implantitis, mucositis, dry mouth, or sensitive gums and teeth.

  • TePe Interdental Brushes Extra Soft are small brushes specially designed to clean between your teeth, where a regular toothbrush does not reach. They also work great for cleaning the teeth next to the surgical site. There are six different sizes

  • TePe Special Care toothbrush has 12,000 ultra-soft bristles. The head of the toothbrush also comes in a compact size for better access in hard-to-reach areas.

  • TePe Gentle Care toothbrush has soft bristles and is slightly firmer than the TePe Special Care. It is a transitional toothbrush before returning to your normal toothbrush.

Please carefully follow your dental professional’s recommended instructions for daily cleaning during and after healing. Watch this video for a detailed description of TePe products to use after oral surgery.
