4 Things to Consider when Choosing Sustainable Products

By choosing eco-friendly dental products, you can minimize a negative environmental impact. While finding products that are eco-friendly, you must also remember they need to effectively disrupt plaque on your teeth.

1. Consider the source of raw material in the product. It is best to choose products sourced from renewable or recycled resources, and they are still hygienic and efficient for oral cleaning. A renewable resource is a resource which can be used repeatedly and replaced naturally. These resources can be recreated or regrown within a relatively short time interval. 

2. Consider production of the product. Is the setting healthy and sustainable for the workers? It is ideal to have an infrastructure with a circular approach throughout operations and minimizes waste. Using renewable energy also reduces the carbon footprint. Renewable energy is energy collected from renewable resources, which are naturally replenished on a human timescale, such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, and geothermal heat.

3. Consider packaging of the product. Packaging should also be created from renewable resources and energy. Look for recyclable and minimal packaging. 

4. Understand how your community disposes of waste. For example, when considering biodegradable options, you must consider disposal. Bio-degradable means something degrades over time by way of microorganisms in a specific environment. How do you separate your household trash? How does your municipal services separate household trash? Whether we are recycling or disposing, each community can operate differently.
