The Ripple Effect of Prevention: Celebrating National Dental Hygiene Month with a Spotlight on Dental Hygienists

One Conversation Can Change a Smile. One Hygienist Can Change Thousands.

Healthy smiles begin with healthy habits. And healthy habits begin with trusted guidance.

That guidance often starts with a dental hygienist.

During National Dental Hygiene Month, we celebrate the professionals who create healthier futures one conversation, one patient, and one small preventive step at a time.

For more than 60 years, TePe has partnered with dental professionals to support preventive oral health through thoughtfully designed, effective oral care solutions.

At TePe, we're honored to support the ripple effect that dental hygienists create every day.

The impact of a dental hygienist isn't measured only in cleanings performed. It's found in the patient who finally starts flossing regularly, the teenager who learns how to care for their teeth during orthodontic treatment, and even the student who discovers a future career path because someone took the time to inspire them.

Few stories capture that ripple effect better than dental hygienist Anna Papietro Williams.

Prevention Was Always the Goal

Anna became a Registered Dental Hygienist in 2017 after deciding she wanted a career in healthcare with a strong focus on prevention.

"I wanted to be able to share information with patients on how to maintain good oral health and how to prevent cavities and gum disease."

Today, Anna works in a family practice in California's East Bay, where she sees hundreds of patients each year. With more than 1,500 appointments annually, every day brings new opportunities to help patients build healthier habits and feel more confident about their oral health.

What Anna enjoys most is getting to know each patient as an individual.

"I love being able to connect with patients as individuals, to meet them where they are, and to tailor their appointment to their needs. A sleep deprived new parent will need different home care advice than an elderly patient with dry mouth, who will require different advice than a patient struggling with depression. It is all about listening to each patient and coming up with a care plan that will best suit them and their individual needs."

Small Changes, Big Results

One of Anna's favorite groups to work with is teenagers, especially those navigating life with braces.

One patient came to her with severe gingivitis during orthodontic treatment. Together, they explored practical ways to improve home care using floss threaders, interdental brushes, and a water flosser.

The goal wasn't perfection. The goal was finding tools and routines that the patient could realistically maintain.

Over time, those small daily changes paid off. The patient's gum health improved significantly, and he progressed from a three-month recall schedule toward long-term maintenance and healthier habits.

It's a reminder that prevention isn't about dramatic moments. More often, it grows through small, consistent steps taken day after day.

The Ripple Reaches Beyond the Operatory

Anna's impact doesn't stop when patients leave the office.

She is an active member of the California Dental Hygienists' Association (CDHA), joining as a student member and quickly discovering a community of passionate professionals dedicated to advancing oral health.

For those outside California, CDHA plays an important role in supporting dental hygienists across the state. The organization advocates for the profession, provides continuing education, supports students and new graduates, and works with policymakers on issues that affect both hygienists and the patients they serve.

Through CDHA, Anna has participated in legislative advocacy efforts, served as President of the East Bay Component, and continues to mentor future hygienists as a student liaison to Chabot College's Dental Hygiene Program.

Helping students discover the profession is especially meaningful to her.

Why? Because Anna's own journey began with a conversation.

As a freshman attending the Coalinga High School Career Fair, Anna was excited to see a familiar face: the dental hygienist who had cared for her throughout childhood. During that conversation, she learned more about the profession for the first time and began to imagine herself following a similar path.

That moment changed the course of her life.

Years later, Anna traveled hours to return to the same career fair, this time standing on the other side of the table and encouraging students to consider dental hygiene as an attainable and rewarding healthcare career.

"My goal with exhibiting at the Coalinga High School Career Fair was to highlight dental hygiene as an obtainable and affordable career path in healthcare. Most dental hygiene programs are at community college, making it a more affordable schooling option than a four year university. I attended community college all the way through my education and want students to know that is an option."

That's the ripple effect in action.

One hygienist inspired Anna. Today, Anna is inspiring the next generation.

Celebrating the Professionals Behind Prevention

National Dental Hygiene Month is about recognizing stories like Anna's and the thousands of hygienists who quietly make a difference every day.

They educate, they encourage, they advocate, they mentor.

And they help patients build habits that support lifelong oral health.

At TePe, we're proud to support the professionals who make prevention possible.

For decades, TePe has worked alongside dental hygienists, listening to their expertise and developing products that help turn personalized recommendations into everyday habits. From preventive tools designed for unique patient needs to educational resources that support oral health conversations, our goal is simple: help hygienists do what they do best.

Because when a hygienist helps one patient improve their oral health, the impact rarely stops with that appointment. It travels outward to families, friends, and future generations.

Prevention Starts With the Right Tools

Each year, we highlight "dental hygienist favorites" for our customers. These are the tools that dental hygienists recommend most often to their patients, and our customers love to learn about them. Because prevention works best when patients have tools they feel confident using every day.

When Anna recommends products to patients, one of her favorite options is the TePe Interdental Brush Original. She appreciates the wide range of sizes available and uses the TePe Size Finder to help patients identify the right fit for their individual needs.

It's a simple example of how personalized recommendations can make healthy habits easier to adopt and easier to maintain.
