Is carbon dioxide bad?
Carbon dioxide (CO₂) often gets a bad rap—but is it really all bad? The truth is, CO₂ is essential to life. Plants need it for photosynthesis, and we naturally produce it when we breathe. It’s also used in everything from carbonated drinks to fire extinguishers.
So why the concern?
The problem isn’t CO₂ itself—it’s how much of it we’re adding to the atmosphere. Human activities like burning fossil fuels and deforestation have dramatically increased CO₂ levels, trapping heat in the atmosphere and driving climate change.
The Bottom Line:
- CO₂ is natural and necessary, but…
- Too much CO₂ in the atmosphere is harmful to the planet.
It’s not about eliminating carbon dioxide—it’s about balancing it. Reducing emissions, protecting forests, and investing in clean energy are key steps toward a healthier climate.
That’s exactly what TePe is doing, reducing emissions! TePe’s path to carbon neutrality is clear, measurable, and inspiring. By combining innovation, collaboration, and accountability, they’re proving that oral health and environmental health can go hand in hand.
Here are some examples from TePe’s past year:
Science-Based Climate Action
- In 2024, TePe conducted a comprehensive greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory in collaboration with the IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute.
Circular Thinking
- TePe is steadily phasing out virgin fossil materials and embracing circular solutions. Their packaging strategy includes increased use of carton-based packaging and 79% of production waste recycled.
- Smarter Process with Materials, Energy, and Packaging
- 85% of plastics used are now from renewable sources.
- TePe uses a mass balance approach certified by ISCC PLUS to ensure traceability and sustainability of renewable plastics.
- 100% renewable electricity powers the Malmo, Sweden production facility, with 10% generated by on-site solar panels.
- In 2024, 98% of their packaging met the target of containing at least 60% renewable, recycled, or FSC-certified materials.
TePe aims for carbon neutrality in both products and packaging. We have lowered our carbon footprint significantly and are able to offer a complete oral care range produced in a sustainable way.
